This lead design came about as a result of what Danny Fairbrass observed during the filming of Underwater Part Four, and he wanted to create the most condensed shape possible, so that the fish moved the minimum possible distance before feeling the full weight of the lead. The most condensed shape is actually a ball, but a lead of this shape isn’t practical for carp fishing as it rolls and is prone to tangles – so Danny made the sides square and gave the back end of the lead a taper to help prevent the hook link tangling around it, and thus the Square Pear lead was born.
